DESIGN OF 1958 COMMEMORATIVE DOLLAR COIN

To All to Whom these Presents shall come or whom the same may in anywise concern, GREETING:
F. P. Varcoe,
Chapter 315 of the Revised Statutes of Canada, 1952, it is
provided that Our Governor in Council may by proclamation prescribe the design
of any coin.
And Whereas it is desirable and Our Governor in Council has
advised that a proclamation do issue prescribing the design of a one dollar
piece to be struck to commemorate the one hundredth anniversary of the gold rush
and the creation of British Columbia as a Crown Colony in 1858.
NOW KNOW YE that by and with the advice of OUR PRIVY
COUNCIL for Canada We do hereby proclaim, direct and determine that the design
of the proposed new silver dollar shall be as hereinafter set out, viz:
The design of the obverse impression shall be the uncrowned
effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Second with the Inscription
"Elizabeth II Dei Gratia Regina."
The design of the reverse impression shall be a
representation of a totem pole, with the word "CANADA" at the upper left, the figures "1858-1958" at the left, the
words "British Columbia" on the right, mountains in the background, and at the bottom the word
"DOLLAR". The coin shall have a graining on the edge.
Of All Which Our Loving Subjects and all others whom these
Presents may concern are hereby required to take notice and to govern themselves
accordingly.
IN TESTIMONY WHEREOF We have caused these Our Letters to be
made Patent and the Great Seal of Canada to be hereunto affixed. Witness: Our
Right Trusty and Well-beloved Counselor, Vincent Massey, Member of Our Order of
the Companions of Honour, Governor General and Commander-in-Chief of Canada.
AT OUR GOVERNMENT HOUSE, in Our City of Ottawa, this
Twenty-first day of February in the year of Our Lord One thousand nine hundred
and fifty-seven and in the Sixth year of Our Reign.

(A typical Proclamation. This particular one appears in the Mint Report of 1957. Mint Reports do not always include them and their inclusion depends upon circumstances. For example, one of the most interesting, the Proclamation withdrawing the Tombacs from circulation, was not included in a Mint Report.)
